Rahu Kaal is found by dividing the time from sunrise to sunset into 8 parts, so it differs from city to city.

Choose your city above to see Rahu Kaal Today together with Yamaganda, Gulika Kaal and the full timings for the next 7 days. Rahu Kaal is different in every city because it is calculated from that city’s own sunrise and sunset — so Delhi, Dehradun and Mumbai, as well as London, New York and Sydney, each get their own correct time.

Rahu Kaal Today

What is Rahu Kaal?

In Vedic astrology Rahu is a shadow planet (chhaya graha). Each day about one and a half hours belong to Rahu; this period is called Rahu Kaal (also Rahu Kalam or Rahukaal). By tradition, new and auspicious work is not started during it — a griha pravesh, a new business, buying a vehicle or property, or setting out on an important journey.

How Rahu Kaal is calculated

The time from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts. On each weekday one fixed part is Rahu Kaal:

WeekdayPart of the dayApprox. time (6 AM sunrise, 6 PM sunset)
Monday2nd7:30 – 9:00 AM
Tuesday7th3:00 – 4:30 PM
Wednesday5th12:00 – 1:30 PM
Thursday6th1:30 – 3:00 PM
Friday4th10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Saturday3rd9:00 – 10:30 AM
Sunday8th4:30 – 6:00 PM

The times in the right-hand column are only an example for a 12-hour day. In winter the day is shorter and in summer longer, so the real Rahu Kaal moves — that is why the tool above calculates it for your exact city and date.

Rahu Kaal Today: what to do and what to avoid

  • Avoid: starting a new business or shop, griha pravesh, fixing an engagement or wedding, buying a vehicle, gold or property, and starting an important journey.
  • Fine to do: daily puja, japa and meditation, work already in progress, study and normal routine.
  • Rahu shanti: many people chant mantras of Durga, Bhairav or Rahu during Rahu Kaal — this is not prohibited.
  • Rahu Kaal is followed especially strictly in South India (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala); in North India people often check Choghadiya as well.

Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal

Three of the eight parts of the day are watched for different reasons. Rahu Kaal is linked to Rahu and is avoided most for new work. Yamaganda is linked to Yama and is also avoided for auspicious beginnings. Gulika Kaal is linked to Gulika, the son of Saturn; it is believed that work done in it tends to repeat, so some consider it fine for good work, but rites such as funerals are not done in it.

The tool shows all three together so you can see at a glance which part of today is free. For auspicious times see Abhijit Muhurat and Choghadiya in Today’s Panchang. Rahu itself is described on Wikipedia.
