Why Hindu names follow the nakshatra
Naming a child is a sanskar in Hindu tradition — the Namkaran sanskar, one of the sixteen life rites. Tradition holds that it is auspicious for the first syllable of the name to match the nakshatra and pada the Moon occupied at birth. This syllable is called the janam akshar or naming letter.
In Vedic astrology the Moon represents the mind, and the nakshatra it occupies at birth is the person’s birth star, which also decides the Moon sign (rashi). That is why the naming syllable comes from the Moon’s nakshatra — not from the Sun sign used in Western horoscopes.
108 syllables: 27 nakshatras × 4 padas
The 360° zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each, and each nakshatra into four padas of 3°20′. That gives 108 padas, each with its own syllable. Every rashi holds exactly nine padas, so some nakshatras fall across two signs.

How the tool finds the naming syllable
- From birth details: the tool calculates the Moon’s sidereal position at the time of birth, finds the nakshatra and pada, and gives the syllable of that pada.
- By choosing: if you already know the nakshatra from a priest or Panchang, select it and see names for all four of its syllables.
For example, a baby born in the second pada of Rohini gets the syllable “Va” — names like Vasudev or Vani — and the tool also lists names starting with O, Vi and Vu. To learn more about the birth star, use the Nakshatra calculator; to find the rashi of an existing name, try Rashi by name.
Why the birth time matters
The Moon is the fastest-moving planet, crossing a nakshatra in roughly a day, so it changes pada about every 6 hours. Two babies born on the same day can have different syllables, and without the time even the nakshatra may be uncertain. Use the exact time from the hospital record, and choose the correct birthplace so the right time zone is applied — this matters for families abroad too.
When a syllable has few names (ङ, ञ, ण)
Very few names begin with ङ (Ardra, pada 3), ञ (Uttara Bhadrapada, pada 4) or ण (Hasta, pada 3). Families commonly:
- use another syllable of the same nakshatra — which is why the tool shows names for all four padas;
- use any of the nine syllables of the rashi (for example, Pisces/Meen: दी, दू, थ, झ, ञ, दे, दो, चा, ची);
- keep a nakshatra name for rituals and a separate everyday name.
Customs differ by family and region, so follow your family priest’s advice.
The Namkaran sanskar
Traditionally the naming ceremony is held on the 11th or 12th day after birth, though many families follow their own custom — the 21st day, within the first month, or another auspicious day picked from the daily Panchang. It usually includes Ganesh puja, remembrance of the family deity and a small havan; in many families the father or an elder whispers the name into the baby’s ear before announcing it.
Tips for choosing a name
- Meaning: pick a name with a positive, beautiful meaning.
- Easy to say: grandparents, teachers and friends — in India or abroad — should be able to say it easily.
- Spelling: settle the English spelling early so documents match.
- Family tradition: many families honour an elder or the family deity in the name.
- With the surname: say the full name aloud to check it sounds right.
Naming by nakshatra is an auspicious custom, not a rule to fear. Many people carry rashi-letter or family names and live happy lives.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find baby names by nakshatra?
Enter your baby’s date, time and place of birth in the tool above, or pick the nakshatra directly. It shows the nakshatra, pada, rashi and naming syllable, with boy and girl names and meanings that start with that syllable.
What is a janam akshar?
It is the naming syllable linked to the nakshatra pada the Moon occupied at birth. Traditionally the baby’s name begins with this syllable.
How many naming syllables are there?
There are 27 nakshatras with 4 padas each, giving 108 padas and 108 syllables. Each rashi contains 9 of them.
Why is the name based on the Moon and not the Sun sign?
In Vedic tradition the Moon represents the mind, and both the birth star and the rashi come from the Moon’s position. The monthly Sun sign is a Western system and is not used for naming.
Is the birth time needed?
Yes. The Moon changes pada about every 6 hours, so babies born on the same day can have different syllables. Use the exact time from the hospital record.
Can I use the tool if I already know the nakshatra?
Yes. Simply choose the nakshatra and you will see names for all four of its syllables.
What if the syllable is ङ, ञ or ण?
Very few names start with these. Families commonly use another syllable of the same nakshatra or any syllable of the baby’s rashi instead.
When is the Namkaran ceremony done?
Traditionally on the 11th or 12th day after birth, though many families follow their own custom, such as the 21st day or another auspicious date.
Which letters are used for Rohini nakshatra?
Rohini’s four syllables are O, Va, Vi and Vu (ओ, वा, वी, वू). The syllable of the pada in which the baby was born is preferred.
Which letters are used for Ashwini nakshatra?
Ashwini’s syllables are Chu, Che, Cho and La (चू, चे, चो, ला). Enter the birth time to find the exact pada.
Is it fine to choose a name from the rashi letters?
Yes. Many families pick any of the nine syllables of the rashi, especially when the birth syllable has few good names. This is a common practice.
What happens if the name does not follow the birth syllable?
Naming by nakshatra is an auspicious custom, not something to fear. Many people have rashi-letter or family names and live happy lives.
Does the tool also show the baby's rashi?
Yes. Along with the nakshatra and pada, it shows the Moon sign (rashi), since each pada falls in one rashi.
What should I keep in mind when choosing a name?
Choose a name with a good meaning that is easy to say, has a clear English spelling and sounds right with the surname. Family tradition and elders’ views matter too.
How do I find the nakshatra of a baby born abroad?
Select the correct birthplace so its time zone is applied, and enter the local birth time. The tool then calculates the Moon’s nakshatra and pada accordingly.
