Nakshatra Calculator — Find Your Birth Nakshatra, Pada, Rashi and Name Letter

Use the Nakshatra calculator: enter your date, time and place of birth to find your birth nakshatra, its pada, your Moon sign (Janma Rashi), the nakshatra lord and the first letter for a name — along with gana, yoni, nadi, varna and vashya, which are used in Kundli matching. Even without a time of birth you get an approximate result.

What is a nakshatra?

The 360° of the sky is divided into 27 equal parts — each 13°20′ part is a nakshatra. The nakshatra in which the Moon stands at birth is your birth nakshatra. Naming, Vimshottari dasha, Kundli matching and many muhurats are set from it.

What the Nakshatra calculator shows

  • Birth nakshatra and pada (1 to 4)
  • Moon sign — used for horoscopes
  • Nakshatra lord — the planet of your first Mahadasha
  • First letter for a name — by pada, with all four letters of the nakshatra
  • Gana, Yoni, Nadi, Varna, Vashya — the basis of guna matching
  • Sun sign (by Vedic calculation)

All 27 nakshatras: lord, rashi and name letters

The table lists each nakshatra’s ruling planet, the rashi it falls in, and the name syllables of its four padas. Knowing the nakshatra, you can choose a child’s name from these letters.

Nakshatra and naming

In Indian tradition a child is named with the syllable of the birth nakshatra’s pada — the naam rashi or nakshatra name. For example, a child born in the third pada of Krittika is named with “U” (such as Umesh or Urmila). To find a rashi from a name alone, see Rashi by name.

Nakshatra lord and dasha

Each nakshatra has a ruling planet, and the nine grahas rule the 27 nakshatras three times in order — Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. The lord of your birth nakshatra is the planet of your first Vimshottari Mahadasha. To see the full dasha, make your free Kundli.

Gandmool nakshatras

Six nakshatras — Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula and Revati — are called Gandmool, as they fall at the junction of a sign and a nakshatra. By tradition a Gandmool shanti puja is done for a child born in them, about 27 days after birth when the Moon returns to the same nakshatra.

Panchak nakshatras

When the Moon is in Aquarius and Pisces — the last two padas of Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati — this roughly five-day period is called Panchak, when some activities are traditionally avoided. See today’s nakshatra in Today’s Panchang.

Gana, Yoni and Nadi

Each nakshatra has a gana (Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa), a yoni (one of 14 animals) and a nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya). These are what Kundli Milan checks at marriage — for example, the same nadi for both means Nadi dosh.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my nakshatra by date of birth?

Enter your date, time and place of birth above. The tool works out the Moon’s position at birth and shows your nakshatra, pada and rashi.

Can I find my nakshatra without a time of birth?

Approximately. The Moon changes nakshatra about once a day, so without a time we calculate for 12 noon — if the nakshatra changed that day, the result may differ.

What are the padas of a nakshatra?

Each nakshatra spans 13°20′ and is divided into four equal parts of 3°20′ called padas. Each pada has a name syllable used for naming.

How are nakshatra and rashi related?

The 108 padas of the 27 nakshatras are spread over 12 rashis — 9 padas, or two and a quarter nakshatras, per rashi. So some nakshatras span two rashis: the first pada of Krittika is in Aries and the other three in Taurus.
