Nadi dosh and its cancellation
The Nadi koota carries the most points, 8. Every nakshatra belongs to the Aadi, Madhya or Antya nadi. If both share the same nadi there is Nadi dosh, considered inauspicious for health and children. The texts give some cancellations — for example the same rashi with different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra in different rashis. Our tool checks these automatically.
Bhakoot dosh
Bhakoot looks at the distance between the two Moon signs. If the signs are 2-12, 5-9 or 6-8 from each other, there is Bhakoot dosh and the koota scores 0 out of 7. It is considered cancelled when both sign lords are the same or mutual friends.
Gana matching: Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa
Every nakshatra has a gana — Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa. The same gana gets the full 6 points; Deva with Rakshasa is the least compatible. Partial points vary slightly between traditions; our tool follows the commonly used boy-girl table.

The kootas in detail
- Varna (1): signs are grouped into Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra; 1 point if the boy’s varna is equal to or higher than the girl’s.
