To make your free Kundli (Vedic birth chart), enter your date of birth, time of birth and place of birth below. Your birth chart appears instantly — the North Indian Lagna chart, the sign, degree, nakshatra and house of the nine grahas, Vimshottari Mahadasha and Antardasha, and a Manglik check. It is calculated by the Vedic method with Lahiri ayanamsa, and your details are not saved anywhere.
What does the free Kundli include?
- Lagna chart (birth chart): a North Indian style chart showing the sign number and planets in every house.
- Planetary positions: sign, degree, nakshatra-pada and house of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu; retrograde planets are marked.
- Lagna, Moon sign and nakshatra: with the first letter for a name.
- Vimshottari Mahadasha: dates of every Mahadasha from birth, and all Antardashas of the current one.
- Manglik check: the house of Mars and whether the chart is Manglik.
How to read a birth chart
The twelve boxes of a Kundli are the twelve houses (bhavas). In the North Indian chart the top-centre box is the 1st house (Lagna), and the houses run anticlockwise. The number in each box is the sign of that house — 1 Aries, 2 Taurus up to 12 Pisces. A planet written in a box was in that house and sign at birth.
The twelve houses
| House | Main themes |
|---|---|
| 1st (Lagna) | Self, body, nature |
| 2nd | Wealth, family, speech |
| 3rd | Courage, younger siblings, short journeys |
| 4th | Mother, home, comfort, vehicles |
| 5th | Children, education, intelligence |
| 6th | Illness, enemies, debts, service |
| 7th | Marriage, spouse, partnership |
| 8th | Longevity, sudden events, the occult |
| 9th | Fortune, dharma, father, guru |
| 10th | Karma, career, status |
| 11th | Gains, income, friends |
| 12th | Expenses, foreign lands, moksha |
The nine grahas
Vedic astrology uses nine grahas — the Sun (soul, father), Moon (mind, mother), Mars (courage, land), Mercury (intellect, speech), Jupiter (wisdom, children, fortune), Venus (love, marriage, comforts), Saturn (karma, discipline), and the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu. Rahu and Ketu always move retrograde and stay exactly seven houses apart.
Lagna, Moon sign and Sun sign
- Lagna: the sign rising in the east at birth. It changes about every two hours, so the time of birth matters most.
- Moon sign (Janma Rashi): the sign of the Moon at birth. In India horoscopes and naming follow it. To find your rashi and nakshatra alone, see the Nakshatra calculator.
- Sun sign: the sign of the Sun, called the “zodiac sign” in Western horoscopes. In the Vedic calculation it falls about 23–24 days behind the Western dates.
Vimshottari dasha: the periods of life
Vimshottari dasha is a 120-year cycle that begins with the lord of the birth nakshatra. The order is always the same — Ketu (7 years), Venus (20), Sun (6), Moon (10), Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19) and Mercury (17). The further the Moon has travelled through its nakshatra at birth, the less of the first Mahadasha remains. Each Mahadasha holds nine Antardashas, starting with its own lord.
| Mahadasha | Length |
|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 years |
| Venus | 20 years |
| Sun | 6 years |
| Moon | 10 years |
| Mars | 7 years |
| Rahu | 18 years |
| Jupiter | 16 years |
| Saturn | 19 years |
| Mercury | 17 years |
Entering your details correctly
- Date of birth: the Gregorian date, as on the birth certificate.
- Time of birth: ask the hospital record or family elders for the exact time. A birth after midnight counts on the next date.
- Place of birth: choose your city or the nearest large city. For a birth abroad choose a city in that country — its time zone and daylight saving time are applied automatically.
Retrograde planets
Seen from Earth, a planet sometimes appears to move backwards in the sky — a retrograde (vakri) planet. Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn turn retrograde from time to time; the Sun and Moon never do, and Rahu and Ketu always move retrograde. In our free Kundli retrograde planets are marked “(R)” in the table and “*” in the chart.
North Indian vs South Indian chart
- North Indian chart (shown here): the houses are fixed — the top box is always the 1st house — and the sign numbers change.
- South Indian chart: the signs are fixed in their boxes and the Lagna is marked.
- Both show the same planetary positions; only the layout differs.
Lagna chart, Moon chart and Navamsa
The Lagna chart is built from the rising sign and is the main chart. The Moon chart takes the Moon sign as the 1st house and is used for transits and Sade Sati. The Navamsa (D9) divides each sign into nine parts and is used for marriage and the true strength of planets.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a free Kundli?
Enter your date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth in the form above and press “Make my Kundli”. The Lagna chart, planetary positions, nakshatra and Mahadasha appear instantly.
How accurate does the time of birth need to be?
As accurate as possible. The Lagna changes about every two hours, so even 10–15 minutes can sometimes change the Lagna and houses. It has very little effect on the signs of the planets.
Which system is used for this Kundli?
The Vedic (sidereal) system with Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa — the system used by most Indian panchangs and astrologers. The chart is in North Indian style.
What is Vimshottari dasha?
A 120-year cycle of planetary periods that starts from the nakshatra of the Moon at birth. Each Mahadasha has a fixed length — Venus 20 years, Sun 6 years and so on — and each contains nine Antardashas.
