Method: the night from the previous sunset to sunrise is divided into 15 muhurtas; Brahma Muhurat is the second muhurta before sunrise (the 14th). Many sources simply use "96 to 48 minutes before sunrise" — the two can differ by a few minutes.

What is Brahma Muhurat?

In Hindu timekeeping a full day and night is made of 30 muhurtas — 15 for the day and 15 for the night. The muhurta just before the last one before sunrise is called Brahma Muhurta (often written Brahma Muhurat). “Brahma” points both to the creator and to brahman, knowledge and the ultimate reality, so the hour has long been seen as the time for learning, spiritual practice and fresh beginnings.

Waking at this time is recommended in old texts: the Manusmriti (chapter 4) advises rising in Brahma Muhurta to reflect on dharma and artha, and the Ayurvedic text Ashtanga Hridaya, in its section on the daily routine, advises a healthy person to rise in Brahma Muhurta to protect their lifespan. Traditions differ a little on exactly how the window is calculated, as explained below.

How the tool calculates it

  1. Length of the night: the time from the previous day’s sunset to the chosen day’s sunrise, for your city’s latitude and longitude.
  2. 15 night muhurtas: that night is split into 15 equal parts.
  3. The 14th muhurta: Brahma Muhurat is the 14th part — the second-last before sunrise. It runs from sunrise minus 2 muhurtas to sunrise minus 1 muhurta.
  4. 7-day table: Brahma Muhurat and sunrise for the next seven days, so you can plan your week.

You can choose from about 215 cities in India and abroad; the date defaults to today and times are shown in the city’s local time.

Why a muhurta is not always 48 minutes

A muhurta is exactly 48 minutes only when day and night are 12 hours each, around the equinoxes in March and September. In winter the night is longer, so a night muhurta stretches to about 54–55 minutes in north India; in summer it shrinks to about 40 minutes. So Brahma Muhurat usually begins about an hour and a half before sunrise and lasts roughly 48 minutes, but anywhere from about 40 minutes to nearly an hour depending on the season.

The fixed 96–48 minute rule

A popular shortcut treats Brahma Muhurat as 96 to 48 minutes before sunrise, assuming a fixed 48-minute muhurta. Around the equinoxes it matches the tool closely; in winter and summer the two can differ by several minutes. Neither is “wrong” — they are two traditions, and the tool mentions the difference alongside the result.

Brahma Muhurat through the seasons

Rough figures for north India (around Delhi) show how much the window moves during the year. Use the tool for your own city.

SeasonNight muhurtaSunriseBrahma Muhurat
Summer (around June)~40 min~5:25 am~4:05 to 4:45 am
Equinox (March / September)~48 min~6:10 am~4:34 to 5:22 am
Winter (around December)~55 min~7:10 am~5:20 to 6:15 am

South India, being closer to the equator, sees much smaller seasonal swings. Because the whole country uses one clock (IST), Brahma Muhurat in the north-east can come close to an hour earlier than in western India.

What to do in Brahma Muhurat

  • Wake and remember God: sit quietly for a few moments before reaching for anything else.
  • Jap: a simple name-mantra such as “Om Namah Shivaya” or “Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram”. The jap mala counter helps you keep count.
  • Meditation and gentle breathing: 10–20 minutes in the quiet; learn pranayama from someone qualified.
  • Prayer and paath: the Gita, Ramayana or a chalisa such as the Hanuman Chalisa.
  • Study: many students find this the best time to revise or memorise.
  • Bath and sandhya: many families bathe in Brahma Muhurat and offer Surya arghya at sunrise.

Tradition advises avoiding going back to sleep, heavy food, anger and arguments, and losing the quiet to the phone and news. That said, the sick, the elderly, pregnant women and night-shift workers should put adequate sleep first.

Benefits, stated honestly

The early morning is quieter, so concentration comes more easily, and a fixed sleep-wake time supports regular sleep. Beyond that, many claims you may read are exaggerated. Waking early only helps if you also sleep early — it is not about cutting sleep. If you have a health condition, ask your doctor before changing your routine.

Myths and facts

  • “Brahma Muhurat is always at 4 am.” It depends on sunrise: around 4 am in a north Indian summer, but after 5 am in winter.
  • “It is always exactly 48 minutes.” Only around the equinoxes; otherwise the length changes with the night.
  • “Prayer outside Brahma Muhurat has no value.” Devotion is about bhava; any time you remember God with a calm mind is sacred.
