Times are for the upper edge of the Sun on a flat horizon (with atmospheric refraction), accurate to about a minute. Hills or tall buildings delay the view by a few minutes.

How sunrise and sunset are defined

Sunrise is the moment the upper edge of the Sun appears on the eastern horizon, and sunset is when the upper edge disappears in the west. The atmosphere also bends sunlight (refraction), so we see the Sun a little before it is geometrically above the horizon. That is why even on the equinox the day is a few minutes longer than 12 hours.

What the tool shows

  • Sunrise and sunset in the city’s local time, for about 215 cities in India and abroad; the date defaults to today.
  • Day length from sunrise to sunset.
  • Solar noon (madhyahna): the moment the Sun is highest, exactly midway between sunrise and sunset. It is not 12:00 on the clock — across India it falls anywhere from about 11 am to 1 pm depending on city and date.
  • Change in day length compared with the previous day.
  • 15-day table of sunrise, sunset and day length.

Times are calculated for the upper edge of the Sun on a flat horizon with standard refraction and are accurate to about a minute. Hills or tall buildings to the east will delay the moment you actually see the Sun.

Why sunrise differs by city and season

Longitude: the Earth turns west to east, so eastern cities see the Sun first — about 4 minutes per degree. With one clock (IST) for the whole country, sunrise in Guwahati can come up to an hour and a half before Mumbai. Latitude: the further north you are, the bigger the seasonal swing. Time zone: abroad, choose your own city; times follow the local clock, including daylight saving where it applies.

Uttarayan and Dakshinayan

Because the Earth’s axis is tilted about 23.4°, the Sun appears to drift north and south through the year. Astronomically the northward journey (Uttarayan) begins at the winter solstice around 21–22 December; Hindu tradition begins Uttarayan at Makar Sankranti, when the Sun enters sidereal Capricorn, now around 14–15 January — the gap of about three weeks comes from the ayanamsa. Dakshinayan begins astronomically around 21 June and traditionally at Karka Sankranti in mid-July. Day length changes fastest near the equinoxes (about 1.5–2 minutes a day in north India) and only by seconds near the solstices.

Longest and shortest days in India

CityLongest day (June)Shortest day (December)
Srinagar~14 h 25 min~9 h 50 min
Delhi~14 h~10 h 20 min
Mumbai~13 h 15 min~11 h
Chennai~12 h 50 min~11 h 20 min

The earliest sunrise does not fall on the longest day: in north India it comes in early-to-mid June, the latest sunset in late June or early July, the latest sunrise in January and the earliest sunset in late November or early December. The Earth’s elliptical orbit and tilt make solar noon drift through the year.

Sunrise in Hindu practice

Udaya tithi: the panchang day runs from sunrise to sunrise, and the tithi running at sunrise is the tithi for the whole day. The weekday also changes at sunrise. So sunrise decides many vrat and festival dates, and different cities can occasionally keep a vrat on different days. Check the daily panchang and the vrat calendar.

Sandhya: tradition keeps three sandhyas — dawn, midday and dusk — and many begin their morning worship before sunrise in Brahma Muhurat. Rahu Kaal, choghadiya, horas and Abhijit muhurat (the 8th of the day’s 15 muhurtas, around solar noon) are all counted from sunrise and sunset.

How to offer Surya arghya

  1. Bathe before sunrise and wear clean clothes.
  2. Fill a copper lota with clean water; you may add a little roli or red sandalwood, akshat and a red flower.
  3. At or shortly after sunrise, face east and raise the lota to about chest height with both hands.
  4. Pour the water slowly in a thin stream, saying “Om Suryaya Namah”. Many view the Sun through the stream — do not stare at the Sun directly, as it can harm your eyes.
  5. Keep a pot or plant below so the water does not fall on your feet, then fold your hands and bow.

Arghya has special importance on Sundays, Makar Sankranti and Chhath, when both the setting and the rising Sun are worshipped — another reason to know the exact sunset and sunrise time for your city.

Frequently asked questions

What is the sunrise time today?

Choose your city in the tool above; the date is set to today. It shows sunrise, sunset, day length, solar noon and a 15-day table.

What is the sunset time today?

The tool shows sunset alongside sunrise for your chosen city, and the 15-day table lists sunset for the coming days.

How accurate are the sunrise and sunset times?

They are calculated for the upper edge of the Sun on a flat horizon with standard refraction and are accurate to about a minute.

Why is sunrise different in different cities?

Eastern places see the Sun first — about 4 minutes per degree of longitude. With one clock across India, Guwahati and Mumbai can differ by up to an hour and a half.

When is the longest day in India?

Around 21 June. Day length is about 14 hours in Delhi and about 12 hours 50 minutes in Chennai.

When is the shortest day in India?

Around 21–22 December. Day length is about 10 hours 20 minutes in Delhi.

What is solar noon?

The moment the Sun is highest in the sky, exactly midway between sunrise and sunset. It is not 12:00 on the clock and changes with city and date.

What is udaya tithi?

The tithi running at sunrise is taken as the tithi for the whole day. That is why sunrise matters for vrat and festival dates.

What are Uttarayan and Dakshinayan?

In Uttarayan the Sun moves northward and days lengthen; in Dakshinayan it moves south. Tradition starts Uttarayan at Makar Sankranti and Dakshinayan at Karka Sankranti.

How do I offer Surya arghya?

At or just after sunrise, face east and pour water slowly from a copper lota while saying “Om Suryaya Namah”. Do not stare directly at the Sun.

How much does day length change each day?

Near the equinoxes it changes by about 1.5–2 minutes a day in north India; near the solstices only by seconds. The tool shows the change from the previous day.

Is the earliest sunrise on the longest day?

No. In north India the earliest sunrise is in early-to-mid June and the latest sunset in late June or early July.

Is day and night exactly 12 hours on the equinox?

No. Because of refraction and measuring from the Sun’s upper edge, the day is a few minutes longer than 12 hours on the equinox.

Can I see sunrise times for cities abroad?

Yes. The tool includes cities outside India, and times are shown in the local time of the city you choose.

Why did I see the Sun later than the time shown?

The time is for a flat horizon. Hills, buildings or haze to the east delay the moment the Sun becomes visible.
