Use this free Gemstone Calculator to find out which gemstone to wear according to your Kundli. Enter your date, time and place of birth — or simply pick your Lagna or Rashi from the list — and the tool suggests your life stone, Karak (Punya) stone and Bhagya stone, each with its planet, substitute stone (uparatna), finger, metal and day for wearing. It also lists the gems you should avoid for your Lagna. It is also searched as a ratna calculator or lucky gemstone by date of birth.
Or — if you know your Lagna / Rashi, pick it directly
How gemstones work in Vedic astrology
Tradition assigns one gem to each of the nine planets — together called the Navratna. A gem is believed to strengthen its planet. That is the key rule: you wear the gem of a planet that is favourable for your chart. Strengthening a planet that rules difficult houses for your Lagna can, by the same logic, increase its difficult results. So there is no single “lucky stone” for everyone; the right gem depends on your Lagna, and the Lagna depends on your birth time.
How this calculator decides
- From birth details: if you know your birth time, the tool calculates your Lagna and advises by it. Without a time, it uses your Moon sign (Rashi) instead, which is less precise.
- By choosing: if you already know your Lagna or Rashi, pick it from the list.
It then looks at which planet rules which house for that Lagna and gives three main gems:
- Life stone (Jeevan ratna): the gem of the Lagna lord — body, health and personality. Considered the safest choice.
- Karak / Punya stone: the gem of the 5th lord — intellect, learning, children and past merit.
- Bhagya stone: the gem of the 9th lord — fortune, dharma and father.
The 1st, 5th and 9th are the trikona houses, the most auspicious in the chart. You can check your ascendant separately with the Lagna calculator.
Gems to avoid
- Avoid: gems of planets that rule only the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th or 12th houses for your Lagna.
- Neutral — only on advice: gems of planets that rule only kendra houses or the 2nd/7th.
- Hessonite (Gomed) and Cat’s Eye (Lehsunia): Rahu and Ketu rule no sign, so their gems are never suggested automatically — wear them only on an astrologer’s specific advice.

Important cautions
- A gem strengthens a planet; it does not “remove” problems. Strengthening the wrong planet can do more harm than good.
- Never wear Blue Sapphire, Hessonite or Cat’s Eye without a qualified astrologer studying your full chart.
- Buy natural, untreated, lab-certified stones. Glass, synthetic or heated/dyed stones are not considered to give a gem’s results.
- Trial period: many astrologers advise wearing a new gem, especially Blue Sapphire, for a few days as a trial and removing it if you feel uneasy.
- Not medical treatment: a gem is no substitute for a doctor or medicine, and no substitute for effort.
Tradition favours wearing a gem on its planet’s day, in Shukla Paksha, at an auspicious time — see the daily Panchang and Choghadiya, and avoid Rahu Kaal. Monthly “birthstones” are a Western custom; in Vedic astrology the gem comes from your Lagna and house lordships.
Frequently asked questions
Which gemstone should I wear according to my Kundli?
Enter your birth details in the gemstone calculator above or pick your Lagna or Rashi. It suggests your life stone, Karak stone and Bhagya stone for your Lagna, and lists the gems to avoid.
Why is the gemstone chosen by Lagna?
A gem strengthens its planet, so it should belong to a planet that is favourable for your chart. Which planets are favourable depends on your Lagna, so the Lagna is the main basis.
What is a life stone (Jeevan ratna)?
It is the gem of your Lagna lord. The Lagna represents body, health and personality, so this is considered the safest gem to wear.
What are the Karak and Bhagya stones?
The Karak or Punya stone is the gem of the 5th lord, linked to intellect, learning and children. The Bhagya stone is the gem of the 9th lord, linked to fortune and dharma.
What if I don't know my birth time?
Without a birth time the tool advises by your Moon sign (Rashi). This is less precise than the Lagna, so confirm with an astrologer before wearing a gem.
Which gemstones should I avoid?
Traditionally you avoid the gems of planets that rule only the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th or 12th houses for your Lagna. The tool lists them separately for you.
Can anyone wear Blue Sapphire (Neelam)?
No. Blue Sapphire is traditionally seen as fast-acting and should only be worn after a qualified astrologer studies your full chart, usually with a trial period.
When are Hessonite and Cat's Eye worn?
Rahu and Ketu rule no sign, so Hessonite (Gomed) and Cat’s Eye (Lehsunia) are never suggested automatically for any Lagna. Wear them only on an astrologer’s specific advice.
Is a lucky gemstone by date of birth reliable?
Monthly birthstones are a Western custom. In Vedic astrology the gem is decided by the Lagna and house lordships worked out from your date, time and place of birth.
What is an uparatna (substitute stone)?
An uparatna is a lighter, more affordable alternative to the main gem, such as garnet for ruby or citrine for yellow sapphire. Its effect is traditionally considered milder.
Which finger should a gemstone be worn on?
Commonly, ruby and red coral go on the ring finger, pearl and emerald on the little finger, yellow sapphire on the index finger and blue sapphire on the middle finger. Traditions vary slightly.
How many carats or ratti should my gemstone be?
There is no single formula. An astrologer decides the weight after studying your chart and the strength of the planet.
How do I make sure a gemstone is genuine?
Buy a natural, untreated stone with a certificate from a recognised gem-testing lab. Glass or synthetic stones are not considered to give a gem’s results.
Can a gemstone cure an illness?
No. A gemstone is not a medical treatment and is no substitute for a doctor or medicine. Always consult a doctor for health problems.
When and how should I wear a gemstone?
Tradition favours wearing it on its planet’s day, in Shukla Paksha and at an auspicious time, after cleansing it with Gangajal or milk and water. Wearing a gem during Rahu Kaal is avoided.
