Use this Lagna Calculator to find your Lagna (Vedic Ascendant) from your date, exact time and place of birth. Using the sidereal Lahiri ayanamsa, it shows the Lagna sign and degree, the Lagna lord and where it sits, the Lagna nakshatra and pada, element and nature, a short personality note, the Yogakaraka planet, the gem of the Lagna lord, the time window during which your Lagna was rising on your birth day, and your Moon sign and Sun sign side by side — with a North Indian birth chart.
What is the Lagna?
The Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth. In English it is called the Ascendant or rising sign. It becomes the 1st house of the chart, and the other eleven houses are counted from it — so the Lagna is the foundation of the whole Kundli. Tradition links it with the body, temperament, personality and outlook on life. The ruler of the Lagna sign is the Lagna lord (Lagnesh), and its placement is considered very important.
Lagna, Rashi and Sun sign — the difference
| What | Decided by | Changes about every | Linked with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lagna (Ascendant) | Sign rising in the east at birth | 2 hours | Body, personality, houses |
| Rashi (Moon sign) | Sign the Moon is in | 2¼ days | Mind, emotions; name letters, transits, Sade Sati |
| Sun sign | Sign the Sun is in | 1 month | Soul, vitality, father |
In India, “your rashi” usually means the Moon sign. Newspaper horoscopes often use the Sun sign, and usually the tropical one, which is often one sign ahead of the Vedic (sidereal) Sun sign. The tool shows all three together. For your birth star in detail, see the nakshatra calculator.
Why the Lagna changes every two hours
The Earth turns once in about 24 hours, so all 12 signs rise over the eastern horizon in a day — roughly two hours each on average. But the lengths are unequal: because the zodiac is tilted against the equator, some signs rise quickly and others slowly. At Indian latitudes, some Lagnas last under an hour and a half and others around two and a half hours, and the gap widens further from the equator. That is why the tool uses your birthplace’s latitude and longitude and shows the exact start and end time of your Lagna on your birth day.
Why the exact birth time matters
On average the Lagna moves about 1° every 4 minutes. If your Lagna is within 1° of a sign boundary, a few minutes’ error in birth time can change the sign — and with it every house, the Lagna lord and the Yogakaraka. The tool shows a warning in that case. A hospital record or birth certificate is the most reliable source.

A Yogakaraka is a planet that rules both a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) and a trikona (1, 5, 9) house for that Lagna — for Taurus, Saturn rules the 9th and 10th. Not every Lagna has one. The gem is shown as traditional information only; a gemstone decision needs the full chart, and the gemstone calculator can help.
What the tool shows
- Lagna sign and degree (sidereal, Lahiri), e.g. “Leo 14°22′”.
- Lagna lord with its sign and house.
- Lagna nakshatra and pada — each nakshatra spans 13°20′ and each pada 3°20′; a Lagna at Aries 15° falls in Bharani, pada 1.
- Element (fire, earth, air, water) and nature (chara/movable, sthira/fixed, dwiswabhav/dual), with a short personality note.
- Yogakaraka planet and the Lagna lord’s gem.
- The rising window of your Lagna on the birth day, and a warning near a sign boundary.
- Moon sign and Sun sign, and a North Indian chart with the Lagna in the top centre house.
Beliefs and facts
- Belief: Lagna and Rashi are the same. Fact: they match only if the Moon was in the rising sign at birth.
- Belief: people born on the same day share a Lagna. Fact: 12 Lagnas rise each day.
- Belief: western rising sign equals Vedic Lagna. Fact: because of the ayanamsa, the Vedic Lagna is often one sign behind.

What is the difference between Lagna and Sun sign?
The Sun sign is the sign the Sun occupies, which stays the same for about a month. The Lagna depends on the time and place of birth and changes 12 times a day.
How often does the Lagna change?
About every two hours on average, so 12 Lagnas rise each day. Their lengths are unequal: depending on latitude, some last under an hour and a half and others around two and a half hours.
Why does the exact birth time matter?
The Lagna moves about 1° every 4 minutes on average. Near a sign boundary, a few minutes can change the Lagna sign, and the tool warns you when your Lagna is within 1° of one.
Does the place of birth affect the Lagna?
Yes. At the same moment, different latitudes and longitudes can have different signs rising, so the birthplace is needed.
What is the Lagna lord?
The Lagna lord is the ruler of the Lagna sign — Mars for Aries, the Moon for Cancer and so on. The tool shows its sign and house.
What is a Yogakaraka planet?
A planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona house for a given Lagna. Saturn is Yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, and Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius.
What is the Lagna nakshatra?
It is the nakshatra in which the Lagna degree falls. Each nakshatra covers 13°20′ and each pada 3°20′, and the tool shows both.
What do movable, fixed and dual Lagnas mean?
Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are movable (chara); Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius are fixed (sthira); Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are dual (dwiswabhav). Tradition sees them as dynamic, steady and adaptable.
Why is my western rising sign different?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac and Vedic astrology the sidereal one (Lahiri ayanamsa). Because of the ayanamsa, the Vedic Lagna is often one sign behind.
Should I wear my Lagna lord's gemstone?
The tool shows the gem only as traditional information. A gemstone should be chosen only after studying the full birth chart.
What does the rising time window mean?
It shows the start and end time on your birth day during which your Lagna sign was rising at your birthplace.
Is this Lagna calculator free?
Yes, it is completely free. Results are accurate when your date, time and place of birth are correct.
