Mahadasha Calculator — Vimshottari Dasha, Antardasha and Pratyantar Dasha

Use this free Mahadasha Calculator to find out which Vimshottari Dasha you are running right now. Enter your date, time and place of birth and the tool shows your current Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantar dasha with start dates, end dates and time left. You also get the dasha balance at birth, the full 120-year Mahadasha timeline with the 9 Antardashas of each period, and the sign and house of the current dasha lord in your chart. It works as a Vimshottari Dasha calculator and an Antardasha calculator in one.

What is a Mahadasha?

In Vedic astrology, a dasha is a period of life during which one planet is believed to have the main influence. The birth chart shows where the planets are; the dasha shows when each planet gives its results. That is why astrologers look at the dasha first when timing events.

The most widely used system is Vimshottari Dasha, described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. “Vimshottari” means 120: the system takes a full life span as 120 years and divides it among the nine planets. Each planet’s main period is its Mahadasha; each Mahadasha is split into nine Antardashas (bhuktis), and each Antardasha into nine Pratyantar dashas.

Vimshottari order, years and nakshatras

OrderDasha lordYearsNakshatras ruled
1Ketu7Ashwini, Magha, Mula
2Venus20Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha
3Sun6Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha
4Moon10Rohini, Hasta, Shravana
5Mars7Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta
6Rahu18Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha
7Jupiter16Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada
8Saturn19Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada
9Mercury17Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati

After Mercury the cycle returns to Ketu. Most people do not live through all nine Mahadashas — the 120-year cycle is the basis of the calculation, not a life expectancy.

How the calculator works

  1. Birth nakshatra: the tool finds the Moon’s sidereal position at birth. The lord of the Moon’s nakshatra is the lord of your first Mahadasha — for example, a Moon in Rohini means you were born in the Moon Mahadasha.
  2. Dasha balance: each nakshatra spans 13°20′. The part of the nakshatra the Moon had already crossed counts as the part of the first Mahadasha already used up. If the Moon had crossed a quarter of Rohini, about 7½ of the Moon’s 10 years remain after birth.
  3. Timeline: the remaining Mahadashas follow in fixed order with their full years, giving the 120-year timeline.
  4. Antardasha: the first Antardasha belongs to the Mahadasha lord itself, then the others follow in order. Length = Mahadasha years × Antardasha planet’s years ÷ 120. In Venus Mahadasha, for instance, Venus–Sun lasts 20 × 6 ÷ 120 = 1 year, and Venus–Rahu 20 × 18 ÷ 120 = 3 years.
  5. Pratyantar: the same proportion applied one level down.

Why birth time matters: time is optional, but the tool warns you if you leave it out. The Moon crosses a nakshatra in roughly a day, so a few hours’ difference can shift the dasha balance by several months, and near a nakshatra boundary it can even change the first Mahadasha. The dasha lord’s house also comes from the Lagna, which needs the time. Different software may use slightly different year lengths and ayanamsas, so dates can differ by a few days.

General themes of each Mahadasha

MahadashaThemes traditionally linked
KetuDetachment, spirituality, sudden change, inner search
VenusMarriage and relationships, comforts, arts, vehicles
SunConfidence, status, father, government matters
MoonMind and emotions, mother, travel, public dealings
MarsCourage, energy, land and property, siblings, competition
RahuAmbition, foreign links, technology, unexpected ups and downs
JupiterLearning, children, dharma, teachers and guidance
SaturnHard work, discipline, patience, service, slow but lasting results
MercuryIntellect, business, communication, studies

These are only general themes. No Mahadasha is good or bad by itself — its results depend on the dasha lord’s sign (exalted, own, friendly, enemy or debilitated), its house and lordships, its conjunctions and aspects, and the transits running at the time. That is why the tool shows the lord’s sign and house but does not claim to predict outcomes. For a full reading, see your free Kundli and check your birth star with the Nakshatra calculator.

Traditional practices during a dasha

  • Sun: offering water to the rising Sun.
  • Moon: Shiva puja on Mondays and chanting “Om Namah Shivaya”.
  • Mars and Saturn: worship of Hanuman ji and reading the Hanuman Chalisa; for Saturn, serving workers and people in need.
  • Mercury and Ketu: Ganesh puja. Jupiter: worship of Vishnu. Venus: Lakshmi puja. Rahu: worship of Durga.

These are devotional traditions, not guarantees — your own effort and choices matter most.

Mahadasha: beliefs and facts

  • Belief: Saturn Mahadasha always brings suffering. Fact: a well-placed Saturn can give great stability and success. Saturn Mahadasha is also different from Sade Sati, which comes from Saturn’s transit over the Moon.
  • Belief: Rahu Mahadasha ruins everything. Fact: many people rise suddenly in Rahu’s period, especially in new fields or abroad; it depends on the chart.
  • Belief: life changes overnight when a dasha changes. Fact: changes usually unfold gradually, shaped by the Antardasha and transits too.

Frequently asked questions

Which Mahadasha am I running now?

Enter your date, time and place of birth in the Mahadasha calculator above. It shows your current Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantar dasha with their start and end dates and the time left.

What is a Mahadasha?

A Mahadasha is a long period of life during which one planet is believed to have the main influence. In the Vimshottari system the nine planets’ Mahadashas add up to 120 years.

What is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari is the most widely used dasha system, described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. It uses a 120-year cycle that starts from the Moon’s nakshatra at birth.

How many years does each Mahadasha last?

Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 years, always in this order, for a total of 120 years.

How is the first Mahadasha decided?

The lord of the nakshatra the Moon occupies at birth is the lord of the first Mahadasha. For example, a Moon in Ashwini, Magha or Mula means you were born in Ketu Mahadasha.

What is the dasha balance at birth?

The part of the birth nakshatra the Moon had already crossed counts as the part of the first Mahadasha already used up. What remains is the balance, which the tool shows in years, months and days.

How is the Antardasha length calculated?

Antardasha length = Mahadasha years × Antardasha planet’s years ÷ 120. For example, the Sun Antardasha in Venus Mahadasha lasts 20 × 6 ÷ 120 = 1 year.

What is a Pratyantar dasha?

Each Antardasha is again divided into nine smaller periods called Pratyantar dashas, using the same proportion: Antardasha length × planet’s years ÷ 120.

Can I find my Mahadasha without birth time?

You get an approximate result, but because the Moon crosses a nakshatra in about a day, the dasha balance can shift by several months. The dasha lord’s house also needs the correct birth time.

Is Saturn or Rahu Mahadasha always bad?

No. No Mahadasha is good or bad by itself; the results depend on the lord’s sign, house, lordships and the influences on it in your own chart.

What is the difference between Saturn Mahadasha and Sade Sati?

Saturn Mahadasha is a 19-year dasha counted from the birth nakshatra. Sade Sati comes from Saturn’s transit through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your Moon sign. They are separate things.

Whose Antardasha comes first in a Mahadasha?

The first Antardasha of every Mahadasha belongs to the Mahadasha lord itself; the other planets follow in Vimshottari order.

Why do dasha dates differ slightly between software?

Programs may use slightly different year lengths and ayanamsas, and a small difference in birth time also changes the balance, so a difference of a few days is normal.

What remedies are done during a Mahadasha?

Tradition suggests worshipping the deity linked to the dasha lord, such as Hanuman ji for Saturn and Mars, Vishnu for Jupiter and Shiva for the Moon. These are devotional practices, not a substitute for effort.

Does this calculator store my birth details?

No. Your birth details are not saved anywhere; they are used only to show the result.
