Day and night are each divided into 12 equal horas, so a hora’s length changes with the season. Horas are used for small tasks — for marriage, griha pravesh and other big events, see a full muhurat.

What is a hora?

In Jyotish a hora is roughly an “hour” ruled by one of the seven planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn. From one sunrise to the next there are 24 horas: 12 for the day and 12 for the night. Together they form the hora chakra. Varahamihira explained the word hora as coming from ahoratra (day and night), with the first and last syllables dropped.

How the calculator works

  1. Sunrise and sunset are calculated for your city and date, along with the next sunrise. You can choose from about 215 cities in India and abroad; the date defaults to today.
  2. Day horas: sunrise to sunset is split into 12 equal parts.
  3. Night horas: sunset to the next sunrise is split into 12 equal parts.
  4. The first hora belongs to the weekday’s lord — Sunday Sun, Monday Moon, Tuesday Mars, Wednesday Mercury, Thursday Jupiter, Friday Venus, Saturday Saturn.
  5. The sequence then always runs Sun → Venus → Mercury → Moon → Saturn → Jupiter → Mars → Sun …

Because the day and night are divided separately, a hora is rarely exactly 60 minutes. In a north Indian June a day hora is about 70 minutes and a night hora much shorter; in winter it is the other way round. Fixed lists such as “Sun hora 6 to 7 am” are therefore usually wrong — the count always starts from that day’s sunrise. Times are shown in the city’s local time.

How the weekdays got their order

The hora sequence follows the planets from the slowest-moving (Saturn) to the fastest (Moon), read in a fixed cycle. Take Sunday: the 1st hora is the Sun’s, so the 8th, 15th and 22nd are too. The 23rd is Venus, the 24th Mercury — and the 25th hora, the first of the next day, belongs to the Moon. So Sunday is followed by Monday. Repeat the same count from Monday and the next day’s first hora is Mars — Tuesday — and so on through the week.

In the panchang the weekday changes at sunrise, not midnight, so a 2 am hora still belongs to the previous day’s cycle.

What each planet’s hora suits

These are traditional associations; astrologers differ on the details.

HoraTraditionally suited forKeep in mind
SunGovernment work, meeting officials, applications, leadership tasksAvoid ego clashes
MoonTravel, meeting people, household mattersAvoid big emotional decisions
MarsProperty matters, tasks needing courage, sports, exerciseAvoid disputes and haste
MercuryStudy, writing, trade, accounts, communicationRead before you sign
JupiterReligious work, learning, finance, auspicious beginningsCounted among the most auspicious horas
VenusArt, music, shopping, relationships, celebrationsWatch overspending
SaturnHard labour, repairs, finishing pending work, long-term tasks, serviceTradition advises avoiding new auspicious beginnings

Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Moon horas are generally considered gentle, and Sun, Mars and Saturn horas firm. Firm does not mean bad — they are recommended for discipline, effort and courage.

A quick example

Say it is a Thursday and you want to open a fixed deposit or start a new course. Thursday’s first hora is Jupiter’s, so the most natural window is the very first hora after sunrise; Jupiter returns again as the 8th hora, in the afternoon. If you need to send an important email or negotiate a deal, look for the Mercury hora instead. If you are abroad, choose your own city — the horas are worked out from your local sunrise, not India’s.

Using horas sensibly

Horas are meant for small, everyday tasks — a phone call, a meeting, an application, a small purchase or starting a short trip. Pick the planet that matches the task, find its hora in the table, and check that it does not overlap Rahu Kaal. Many people also cross-check with the choghadiya.

A hora is not a substitute for a full muhurat. Marriage, griha pravesh, mundan or buying a vehicle need tithi, nakshatra, yoga, lagna and more — see the vivah muhurat page or consult a qualified pandit. And no hora guarantees success: preparation and effort still decide the outcome. For today’s tithi and nakshatra, see the daily panchang.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find today's hora?

Choose your city in the hora calculator above; the date is set to today. You get all 24 horas with times and planets, and the hora running now is highlighted.

What is a hora in Vedic astrology?

A hora is a unit of time ruled by one of the seven planets. There are 24 horas from one sunrise to the next — 12 in the day and 12 in the night.

How are horas calculated?

Sunrise to sunset is divided into 12 equal parts, and sunset to the next sunrise into another 12. The first hora belongs to the weekday’s lord, and the order then runs Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars.

What is the order of planetary hours?

Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, then back to the Sun. The cycle starts each day with the lord of that weekday.

Is a hora exactly one hour?

Not usually. A Vedic hora is one-twelfth of the day or the night, so day horas are longer than an hour in summer and shorter in winter.

Which hora is auspicious?

Traditionally Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Moon horas are considered gentle, with Jupiter hora favoured for auspicious beginnings. The right hora depends on the kind of task.

Which hora is good for what?

Traditionally: Sun for government work, Moon for travel and household matters, Mars for property and courage, Mercury for study and trade, Jupiter for religious and financial work, Venus for art and shopping, Saturn for hard work and repairs.

What should be avoided in Saturn hora?

Tradition advises avoiding new auspicious beginnings in Saturn hora. It is considered suitable for hard work, repairs, finishing pending tasks and service.

How do horas explain the order of weekdays?

The 25th hora of a day is the first hora of the next. On Sunday the 25th hora is the Moon’s, so Monday follows; the same count gives every day of the week.

Do horas start at sunrise or midnight?

In the Vedic system the hora cycle starts at sunrise, as the weekday does in the panchang. A 2 am hora still belongs to the previous day’s cycle.

Can I use a hora instead of a muhurat for marriage?

No. Horas are for small daily tasks. Major events need a full muhurat that considers tithi, nakshatra, lagna and more.

What is the difference between hora and choghadiya?

Hora divides the day and night into 12 parts each, ruled by planets; choghadiya divides them into 8 parts each. Many people check both for everyday tasks.

Why do hora timings differ between cities?

Horas are built from sunrise and sunset, which differ by city. Choose your own city; abroad, times are shown in local time.

Does the tool show the current hora?

Yes. When the selected date is today, the hora running at the moment is highlighted in the table.

Does working in an auspicious hora guarantee success?

No. A hora is traditional guidance; results still depend on your preparation, effort and circumstances.
