Vivah Muhurat — Auspicious Marriage Dates

Planning a wedding starts with one question: when are the auspicious dates? This tool lists every vivah muhurat — the shubh muhurat for marriage — for your city, from today to the end of next year. Dates are grouped by month and each one shows the weekday, nakshatra, tithi and the auspicious time window on that day. It also shows the periods when there is no marriage muhurat and why, such as Kharmas, Chaturmas or Guru and Shukra asta.

Rules used
  • Nakshatras: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati
  • Tithis (Shukla): Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Trayodashi · (Krishna): Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Trayodashi
  • Weekdays: all days
  • No muhurat during: Kharmas (Sun in Sagittarius or Pisces), Chaturmas (Devshayani to Devuthani Ekadashi), Jupiter combust (Guru asta), Venus combust (Shukra asta), Adhik maas, Holashtak, Bhadra (Vishti karana)

These dates are calculated by the standard rules above. Panchang makers differ slightly, and many also check lagna shuddhi and the person’s own chart — confirm the final muhurat with your purohit.

What is a vivah muhurat?

Vivah is one of the sixteen Hindu sanskars, and families traditionally begin it at a time when every limb of the panchang — tithi, weekday, nakshatra, yoga and karana — is favourable. Muhurta texts such as the Muhurta Chintamani list the nakshatras and tithis suited to marriage, and also look at the Sun’s sign, whether Jupiter and Venus are visible, and whether Chaturmas or an Adhik maas is running. The aim is a thoughtful, auspicious beginning, not fear.

How the tool finds wedding dates

Choose your city from about 215 in India and abroad (Delhi is the default). The tool calculates each day’s panchang from local sunrise — a Hindu day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise, so the weekday also changes at sunrise — and checks it against these rules:

RuleWhat is required
Nakshatra (11)Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati
TithiDwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Trayodashi of either paksha (Purnima not included)
WeekdayNo separate weekday restriction — all seven days included (some families avoid Tuesday)
Sun’s signAries, Taurus, Gemini, Scorpio, Capricorn or Aquarius — the marriage season
BhadraHours of Vishti karana are removed from the window
Excluded periodsKharmas, Chaturmas, Guru or Shukra asta, Adhik maas, Holashtak

Because tithis and nakshatras change during the day, each date carries the time window in which all the conditions hold together. It may run from morning to night, or last only a few hours.

When there is no marriage muhurat

  • Kharmas: the Sun in Sagittarius (roughly mid-December to mid-January) or Pisces (roughly mid-March to mid-April).
  • Chaturmas: from Devshayani Ekadashi (Ashadha Shukla 11) to Devuthani Ekadashi (Kartik Shukla 11), when Lord Vishnu is believed to be in yoga nidra.
  • Guru or Shukra asta: when Jupiter or Venus is too close to the Sun to be seen (“tara doobna”); both are key planets for marriage.
  • Adhik maas: the extra lunar month that comes about every three years, kept for devotion rather than new ceremonies.
  • Holashtak: the eight days before Holika Dahan.

Even after Devuthani Ekadashi, if the Sun is still in Libra the season opens only when it enters Scorpio, around mid-November.

Reading the result

  1. Choose the city where the pheras will take place, not where either family lives.
  2. Scan the months; a month with no dates shows the reason.
  3. Note the time window, nakshatra and tithi of the dates you like.
  4. Take three or four options to your family purohit for confirmation.

The list follows the standard rules above. Panchang makers differ: some also check lagna shuddhi for the exact phera time, the bride’s and groom’s own charts, Godhuli lagna or regional custom, so a date or two may differ between calendars. The final muhurat should always be fixed with your purohit.

Kundli milan and manglik dosh

Many families match horoscopes before fixing a wedding. The Ashtakoot method scores 36 gunas across eight kootas; 18 or more is usually considered acceptable, though astrologers look at the whole chart, not just the score. Try the kundli milan tool. Manglik dosh is often a source of worry, but texts give many cancellations and when both partners are manglik it is considered balanced — check it calmly with the manglik dosh calculator.

Devuthani Ekadashi and the wedding season

In North India the wedding season traditionally opens with Devuthani (Prabodhini) Ekadashi, when Lord Vishnu is believed to wake, and Tulsi vivah — the marriage of Tulsi with Shaligram — is performed in many homes on the Ekadashi or Dwadashi. Broadly there is a winter season (Sun in Scorpio, then Capricorn and Aquarius) and a summer season (Sun in Aries, Taurus and Gemini, until Devshayani Ekadashi). Jupiter or Venus combustion or an Adhik maas can leave long gaps, which is why the tool shows this year and next year together. For any single day’s full panchang see the daily panchang.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the vivah muhurat for my city?

Choose the city where the wedding will take place in the tool above. It lists every auspicious date from today to the end of next year, grouped by month, with weekday, nakshatra, tithi and time window.

Which nakshatras are auspicious for marriage?

Traditionally eleven: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati.

Which tithis are good for a wedding?

Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi of either paksha. The rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi) and Amavasya are avoided.

Which weekdays are allowed for marriage muhurat?

The tool keeps no separate weekday restriction, as most published vivah lists include all seven days; some families still avoid Tuesday by custom. The weekday changes at sunrise, not at midnight.

Why are there no weddings during Kharmas?

Kharmas is when the Sun is in Sagittarius or Pisces, roughly mid-December to mid-January and mid-March to mid-April. By tradition auspicious ceremonies are paused during these months.

What is Chaturmas and why does it stop weddings?

Chaturmas runs from Devshayani Ekadashi to Devuthani Ekadashi, the four months when Lord Vishnu is believed to be in yoga nidra. Marriages are traditionally not held during this time.

What does Guru asta or Shukra asta mean?

It is when Jupiter or Venus is too close to the Sun to be seen, often called ‘tara doobna’. Both are key planets for marriage, so no muhurat is given during their combustion.

When does the wedding season start?

In North India it traditionally begins after Devuthani Ekadashi and Tulsi vivah, though dates become plentiful once the Sun enters Scorpio around mid-November.

What is the time window shown with each date?

It is the part of the day, from sunrise to the next sunrise, when the tithi, nakshatra and other conditions are all favourable and Bhadra is not running.

Why might these dates differ from my panchang?

Panchang makers differ in detail; some also check lagna shuddhi, the couple’s charts, Godhuli lagna or regional rules. A date or two may differ, so confirm with your family priest.

Can I use this tool for a wedding abroad?

Yes. Choose the city abroad where the wedding will happen and the times will follow its local sunrise and clock.

Is Purnima a good day for marriage?

Purnima is not among the tithis used in this tool’s marriage rules, so Purnima dates do not appear in the list.

Is kundli milan needed before fixing the date?

It depends on family custom. Many families check Ashtakoot matching out of 36 gunas, where 18 or more is usually considered acceptable, along with the full charts.

Can a manglik person marry on any muhurat?

The muhurat is chosen the same way. Manglik dosh has many traditional cancellations, so discuss it calmly with an experienced astrologer rather than worry.

Are weddings held during Holashtak?

Holashtak is the eight days before Holika Dahan, when auspicious ceremonies are traditionally postponed, so the tool shows no muhurat then.
