What is griha pravesh muhurat?

In Hindu tradition, moving into a new home is marked like a small sanskar, with a kalash, Ganesh puja, Vastu puja and prasad. The muhurat is the time when the tithi, weekday and nakshatra are considered favourable for stability and prosperity. Most griha pravesh nakshatras are dhruva (fixed) — Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada — or mridu (gentle) — Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Revati — reflecting the wish for a settled, peaceful home.

How the tool calculates the dates

Pick your city from about 215 in India and abroad (Delhi is the default). The tool works out each day’s panchang from local sunrise to the next sunrise and checks:

RuleWhat is required
Nakshatra (10)Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati
Shukla paksha tithiDwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Trayodashi
Krishna paksha tithiDwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami only
WeekdayMonday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
BhadraVishti karana hours are kept out of the window
Excluded periodsKharmas, Chaturmas, Guru or Shukra asta, Adhik maas, Holashtak

The waxing Moon is preferred for a new home; the first few Krishna tithis are accepted because the Moon is still nearly full. Each date shows the time window in which every condition holds and Bhadra is absent — the time to cross the threshold with the kalash.

When there is no griha pravesh muhurat

  • Kharmas: the Sun in Sagittarius (about mid-December to mid-January) or Pisces (about mid-March to mid-April).
  • Chaturmas: Devshayani Ekadashi to Devuthani Ekadashi.
  • Guru or Shukra asta, Adhik maas and Holashtak (the eight days before Holika Dahan).

If your house is ready during Chaturmas, many families clean, paint and arrange it, then do the formal entry at the first good muhurat after Devuthani Ekadashi.

Three kinds of griha pravesh

TypeWhen
ApurvaEntering a newly built or newly bought house for the first time — full muhurat and puja
SapurvaReturning to your own home after a long journey or stay away — a simple puja on a good day
DwandwaMoving back after repairs, rebuilding or a disaster — purification, Vastu shanti and Ganesh puja

A simple griha pravesh puja

  1. Clean the house; hang a toran of mango leaves, draw rangoli and a swastik at the door.
  2. Fill a copper or brass kalash with water, a few grains of rice and a coin, and top it with mango leaves and a coconut.
  3. In the auspicious window, enter with the right foot first, to the sound of a conch or bell, carrying the kalash.
  4. Begin with Ganesh puja — lamp, incense, flowers, durva and sweets.
  5. Perform Vastu puja for peace in the home; many families add a small havan.
  6. Boil milk on the new stove and let it rise over — a symbol of abundance — then make kheer or prasad from it.
  7. Offer bhog and share prasad with family, neighbours and guests.

Devotion matters more than the size of the ritual; a simple puja is complete in itself.

Using the result

Choose the city where the new house is, shortlist two or three dates with a comfortable window, and check that day’s Rahu Kaal and Choghadiya if your family avoids Rahu Kaal — this tool does not remove it. The list follows the standard rules above; panchang makers may also check the lagna at entry, the owner’s chart, Uttarayan or the facing of the main door, so a date may differ. Fix the final date and time with your purohit. Buying a car too? See the vehicle purchase muhurat.

Myths and facts

  • Living in a house without a muhurat is unlucky. A muhurat is a tradition of an auspicious start, not a reason for fear. If you must move in early, many families do a simple puja and the full griha pravesh puja later on a good date.
  • Only a big, expensive puja brings peace. Tradition values devotion; a kalash, Ganesh puja, a lamp and prasad make a complete puja.
  • Sunday is best because it is a holiday. A holiday is convenient, but this tool’s rules use Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the griha pravesh muhurat?

Choose the city where your new house is in the tool above. It lists every auspicious date from today to the end of next year with weekday, nakshatra, tithi and time window.

Which nakshatras are good for griha pravesh?

Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati.

Which tithis are good for entering a new house?

Shukla Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi, and only Dwitiya, Tritiya and Panchami in Krishna paksha.

Which days of the week are good for griha pravesh?

The tool uses Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The weekday changes at sunrise.

Can griha pravesh be done during Chaturmas?

Traditionally it is postponed from Devshayani to Devuthani Ekadashi, so the tool shows no muhurat then. Many families prepare the house and enter after Devuthani Ekadashi.

Why is there no griha pravesh during Kharmas?

Kharmas is when the Sun is in Sagittarius or Pisces, about mid-December to mid-January and mid-March to mid-April, and auspicious ceremonies are paused.

What are apurva, sapurva and dwandwa griha pravesh?

Apurva is the first entry into a new house, sapurva is returning home after a long absence, and dwandwa is moving back after repairs, rebuilding or a disaster.

What are the main steps of griha pravesh puja?

Cleaning and decorating the house, entering with a kalash right foot first, Ganesh puja, Vastu puja, boiling milk in the new kitchen and sharing prasad.

Why is milk boiled during griha pravesh?

Letting milk rise over on the new stove is a traditional symbol of abundance in the home. The milk is then used for kheer or prasad.

Should I check a muhurat when moving into a rented house?

There is no strict rule; it depends on your faith. Many people pick a good day and do a simple kalash and Ganesh puja.

Does the tool avoid Rahu Kaal?

No. It checks tithi, nakshatra, weekday, Bhadra and the excluded periods. If your family avoids Rahu Kaal, check it separately for that day.

Why do these dates differ from my panchang?

Some panchang makers also check the lagna at entry, the owner’s chart, Uttarayan or the facing of the main door, so a date or two may differ. Confirm with your purohit.

Which city should I choose?

Choose the city where the new home is, because the auspicious window depends on its local sunrise. For a home abroad, choose that city.

Is Krishna paksha good for griha pravesh?

Only its first tithis — Dwitiya, Tritiya and Panchami — are used, since the Moon is still nearly full. The waxing fortnight is generally preferred.

What if I must move in before a muhurat?

Many families move in after a simple puja and perform the full griha pravesh puja later on an auspicious date. Ask your purohit; there is no need to fear.
