Times are for an open, flat horizon (accurate to about 1–2 minutes). Buildings, hills, haze or clouds can delay the sighting by a few minutes. Before breaking a vrat, also check your local panchang.
Why does the Moon rise about 50 minutes later each day?
The Earth’s rotation makes both the Sun and the Moon rise in the east. But the Moon is also moving along its own orbit, shifting roughly 12–13° eastward across the sky every day. The Earth has to turn a little extra to bring the Moon back to the horizon, and that takes about 50 minutes on average. The daily delay is not constant — depending on the season and the angle of the Moon’s path, it can be closer to half an hour or more than an hour.
Because of this steady delay, about once a month there is a date with no moonrise at all. If the Moon rises at 11:40 pm one night, the next rise comes after midnight, on the following date, and the date in between has none. The 15-day table marks these days so they don’t cause confusion.
How the tool works
- City and date: choose from about 215 cities in India and abroad; the date defaults to today. Times are shown in the city’s local time.
- Accuracy: moonrise and moonset are calculated astronomically for a flat, open horizon and are accurate to about 1–2 minutes.
- Tithi at moonrise: the tithi and paksha running at the moment the Moon rises, which is what many vrats depend on.
- Illumination, rashi and nakshatra: the percentage of the Moon that is lit, and the sign and nakshatra it is passing through.
- 15-day table: date, tithi, moonrise and moonset for the coming days, with Sankashti Chaturthi, Karwa Chauth, Purnima and no-moonrise days marked.
The time shown is when the Moon crosses the horizon. You may actually see it a few minutes later if there are buildings, trees, hills, haze or clouds to the east, so reach an open terrace a little early.
Why moonrise differs from city to city
- Longitude: places further east see the Moon rise earlier — about 4 minutes for every degree of longitude. Since all of India runs on one clock (IST), the Moon can rise in Guwahati or Kolkata nearly an hour before Mumbai or Ahmedabad.
- Latitude: the angle at which the Moon climbs changes with latitude, so cities north or south of each other can differ by several minutes.
- Time zone: if you live abroad, always choose your own city — the time is given on your local clock, not Indian time.
Approximate moonrise by tithi
| Tithi | Moonrise roughly | When you can see it |
|---|---|---|
| Shukla Dwitiya | 1–1.5 hours after sunrise | Briefly in the west after sunset, as a thin crescent |
| Shukla Ashtami | Around noon | High in the evening sky, sets near midnight |
| Purnima | Around sunset | All night, full disc |
| Krishna Chaturthi | 2.5–3.5 hours after sunset | Often between 8 and 10 pm |
| Krishna Ashtami | Around midnight | Late night to morning |
| Amavasya | Around sunrise | Not visible |
Moonrise for vrats
Karwa Chauth
Karwa Chauth falls on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi in the purnimanta calendar (the same day is called Ashwin Krishna Chaturthi in the amanta calendar). Married women fast all day and break the fast after sighting the Moon and offering arghya. Moonrise is usually around 8–9 pm, but it varies noticeably by city, so check your own city in the tool.
Sankashti Chaturthi
Every Krishna paksha Chaturthi is kept as Sankashti Chaturthi for Lord Ganesha, and the fast is broken after seeing the Moon. Tradition looks for Chaturthi to be running at moonrise, which is why the tool shows the tithi at moonrise. When tithis shorten or stretch, calendars can differ on the date, so confirm it with the vrat calendar.
Purnima and Dwitiya Chandra darshan
On Purnima the Moon rises close to sunset, useful for Purnima vrat, Satyanarayan katha or keeping kheer in the moonlight on Sharad Purnima. On Shukla Dwitiya the Moon rises in the morning and is invisible in daylight; the darshan happens after sunset, low in the west, until the Moon sets. On that day, look at the moonset time — the window between sunset and moonset is your chance to see it.
How to offer Chandra arghya
- Wash up or bathe a little before moonrise.
- Fill a lota or karwa with clean water; many families add a little raw milk, akshat (rice), white flowers or mishri.
- Face the Moon and pour the water slowly in a thin stream, often viewing the Moon through it.
- Remember Chandra Dev — you may say “Om Somaya Namah” — and pray for your family’s wellbeing.
- On Karwa Chauth the Moon and then the husband’s face are seen through a sieve; on Sankashti, Ganesha puja follows the arghya and then the fast is broken.
If clouds hide the Moon, many families offer arghya towards the east once the moonrise time has passed; follow your elders’ or priest’s guidance. For today’s tithi and muhurat see the daily panchang, and for the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth try the nakshatra calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What time will the moon rise today?
Choose your city in the tool above; the date is already set to today. It shows the local moonrise and moonset time, the tithi at moonrise and a 15-day table.
Why does the moon rise later every day?
The Moon moves about 12–13° eastward along its orbit each day, so the Earth must turn a little more to bring it back to the horizon. On average this makes moonrise about 50 minutes later each day.
Why is moonrise different in different cities?
Cities further east see the Moon rise earlier, about 4 minutes per degree of longitude, and latitude also has an effect. With one clock (IST) for all of India, moonrise can differ by up to an hour between east and west India.
How accurate are the moonrise times?
They are calculated astronomically for a flat, open horizon and are accurate to about 1–2 minutes. The Moon may become visible a few minutes later behind buildings, haze or clouds.
What time is moonrise on Karwa Chauth?
Karwa Chauth falls on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi (purnimanta) and moonrise is usually around 8–9 pm. Select the Karwa Chauth date and your city in the tool for the exact time.
How do I find moonrise for Sankashti Chaturthi?
Sankashti Chaturthi (Krishna paksha Chaturthi) is marked in the 15-day table. Check that day’s moonrise; traditionally the fast is broken after seeing the Moon and offering arghya.
Why is there no moonrise on some dates?
If the Moon rises just before midnight one night, the next moonrise comes after midnight on the following date, leaving one date with none. The table marks such days.
When does the full moon rise?
On Purnima the Moon rises around sunset and stays up all night. Purnima days are marked in the table.
When can I see the Dwitiya moon?
On Shukla Dwitiya the Moon rises in the morning but is lost in daylight. Look low in the west after sunset, before the moonset time shown by the tool.
How do I offer arghya to the moon?
Fill a lota with water, optionally adding a little milk, rice and white flowers, face the Moon and pour the water slowly while remembering Chandra Dev. Family customs vary a little.
What does the moon illumination percentage mean?
It is the share of the Moon’s disc that appears lit, close to 100% on Purnima and close to 0% around Amavasya.
Can I check moonrise time in the USA, UK or other countries?
Yes, the tool includes cities abroad. Choose your city and the time is shown in its local time, not Indian time.
Why does the tool show the tithi at moonrise?
Several vrats, such as Sankashti Chaturthi, depend on the tithi running when the Moon rises. Confirm vrat dates with the vrat calendar or your local panchang as well.
Does the tool show the moon's rashi and nakshatra?
Yes, it shows the rashi and nakshatra the Moon is in at that time, along with its illumination.
What if clouds hide the moon on a vrat day?
Many families offer arghya in the Moon’s direction once the moonrise time has passed and then break the fast. Follow the guidance of your elders or family priest.
