Who is Ahoi Mata?
Ahoi Mata is worshipped as a form of Goddess Parvati who protects children. The word “Ahoi” is linked with “anhoni” — misfortune — so she is the goddess who averts misfortune. In the puja her image is drawn together with a syahu (porcupine) and its cubs, which come from the vrat katha.
Ahoi Ashtami puja samagri
- An image of Ahoi Mata — drawn on the wall with geru (red ochre), on cloth, or a printed calendar
- A kalash or karva filled with water (many families use the karva from Karwa Chauth)
- Roli, akshat, kalawa, flowers, durva grass and a lamp
- A silver Ahoi pendant (syahu) and beads for the mala
- Bhog: eight puris, eight pua or sweet gulgule, halwa, and in some homes water chestnuts and gram
- Dakshina and bayana for the mother-in-law or eldest woman of the house
Ahoi Ashtami puja vidhi — step by step
- After bathing in the morning, take the vow (sankalp) of the fast for your children’s long life. Most mothers fast without water until the stars appear.
- In the afternoon draw Ahoi Mata on the wall with geru — an eight-cornered (ashta koshthak) figure with the syahu and her cubs — or put up a printed image.
- Place a kalash or karva filled with water on a chowki before the image, draw a swastika on it and light a lamp.
- In the evening muhurat offer roli, rice, flowers and kalawa to Ahoi Mata, and keep the silver syahu and beads in the puja.
- Offer puri, pua and halwa as bhog and listen to the Ahoi Ashtami vrat katha with the family.
- Give the bayana (bhog, some money or clothes) to your mother-in-law or the eldest woman and take her blessings.
- When the stars appear, offer water from the karva to the stars and pray for your children’s happiness; then eat and break the fast.
- The water of the karva is kept; many families sprinkle it around the home on Diwali.
Ahoi Ashtami vrat katha
Long ago a moneylender had seven sons. Before Diwali, his wife went to the forest to dig soil to plaster the house. While digging, her spade accidentally killed a porcupine cub (syahu). She was very sad, but went home.
Some time later her seven sons died one after another. In grief she told the elderly women of the village what had happened. They advised her to atone for the sin committed unknowingly: to fast on Kartik Krishna Ashtami, draw Ahoi Mata with the syahu and her cubs, worship them and ask for forgiveness.
The moneylender’s wife kept the fast with complete devotion. Ahoi Mata was pleased, and her seven sons came back to life. Since then mothers keep the Ahoi Ashtami fast every year for the protection and long life of their children.

| Morning | Bath, sankalp and cleaning the house. Choose the place of worship. |
| Afternoon | Draw or put up the image of Ahoi Mata; start preparing the bhog. |
| After 5:00 PM | Set up the puja chowki, fill the karva with water and keep the lamp ready. |

A simple puja vidhi for working mothers
If office or travel makes it hard to draw the image on the wall, use a printed image or calendar of Ahoi Mata from the market. In the evening place the image on a chowki with a lota or karva of water, a lamp and a little bhog (puris or any sweet) before it. Offer roli and rice, read or listen to the katha, and offer water to the stars when they appear. Faith and devotion matter most — the fast is complete even with simple samagri.
Ahoi Ashtami udyapan (ujman) vidhi
In many families the udyapan (ujman) of Ahoi Ashtami is done in the year after a child is born or married. The custom differs from family to family and region to region, so ask the elder women of your home before doing it. Generally it includes:
- The usual worship of Ahoi Mata and the katha.
- A bayana is set out on a plate — four puris in seven places (or puri and halwa as per family custom).
- The bayana is given to the mother-in-law or eldest woman along with a saree, suhag items and dakshina.
- Many homes also feed seven married women or children.
The syahu mala custom
After the fast, mothers wear the silver syahu mala that was kept in the puja. By tradition it is worn until Diwali and then taken off on an auspicious day and put away safely. The same mala is worshipped the next year, and in many families a new bead is added in the name of each child. Some homes sprinkle water on the mala and offer jaggery when taking it off.
What if it is cloudy and the stars are not visible?
If clouds hide the stars, about 20–25 minutes after your city’s sunset face the sky, meditate on the stars, offer water and break the fast. Families who offer water to the moon break the fast after moonrise on the night of 1 November (about 11:40 PM in Delhi). Check your city’s sunset and moonrise in the Daily Panchang, and see the full list of coming fasts in the Vrat Calendar.
Rules of the Ahoi Ashtami fast
- Take no food or water until the stars appear; if you are unwell, keep the fast with fruit or water.
- By tradition, digging soil, cutting with sharp tools and sewing are avoided on this day.
- Bless your children through the day; breaking the fast with water or a sweet from their hands is considered auspicious.
- Pregnant women and anyone unwell should consult a doctor before a waterless fast.
Radha Kund snan
On the night of Ahoi Ashtami there is a special tradition of bathing in Radha Kund at Govardhan near Mathura. It is believed that couples hoping for a child who bathe there with faith on this night have their wish fulfilled, so thousands of devotees gather there.
Significance of Ahoi Ashtami
Ahoi Ashtami is observed with deep devotion across North India — especially Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. It is also called “Ahoi Aathe”, because it falls on the Ashtami (eighth lunar day). Mothers believe that by the grace of Ahoi Mata misfortune is kept away from their children, who are blessed with long life, good health and success. The fast was once kept mainly for sons; today mothers keep it equally for sons and daughters.
The fast also marks the start of the Diwali season. After Ahoi Ashtami, homes get busy with Diwali cleaning, rangoli and shopping, and within days come Dhanteras, Narak Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja.
