Meaning of the aarti

Glory to you, Mother Lakshmi. Lord Vishnu and the Creator serve you day and night. Uma, Rama and Brahmani are all your forms; you are the mother of the whole world, and the Sun, the Moon and the sage Narada meditate on you and sing your praise.

In your pure form as Durga you give happiness and wealth. Whoever meditates on you gains prosperity, success and riches. Where you live, good qualities come; everything becomes possible and the mind is free of worry. Food, clothing and sacred rites are all possible only by your grace.

You arose from the ocean of milk during the churning of the ocean and are the beautiful temple of all good qualities; no one can obtain even the fourteen jewels of that churning without you. Whoever sings this aarti of Mahalakshmi with devotion is filled with joy and freed of sin.

When and how to perform Lakshmi aarti

  • On Diwali (8 November 2026) after Lakshmi-Ganesh puja in Pradosh Kaal, and on Dhanteras.
  • On Sharad Purnima, every Friday and every Purnima.
  • By tradition the Ganesh aarti is sung first, then the Lakshmi aarti.
  • Light a ghee lamp or camphor and move the plate clockwise before the deity — four times at the feet, twice at the navel, once at the face and seven times over the whole form.
  • Afterwards pass your hands over the flame, touch them to your eyes and head, and share the prasad.

Goddess Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, prosperity and good fortune and the consort of Lord Vishnu — read more on Wikipedia.
