Meaning of Surya Dev Aarti
- Refrain: Glory to you, Lord, son of Kashyap and Aditi. You destroy the darkness of the three worlds and are cool like sandalwood to the devotee’s heart.
- The chariot: you sit on a one-wheeled chariot with seven horses; you remove sorrow, give happiness and wash away the mind’s impurity.
- Radiance: gods, sages and Brahmins bow to you; you are Divakar of pure splendour, destroyer of sins, wearing a garland of divine rays.
- Savita: you are Savita, source of all good deeds and bringer of good — the eye of the world, who frees us from worldly bondage.
- Remover of pain: you make lotuses bloom and end the three kinds of suffering; serving you easily removes the pain of the mind.

How to offer arghya and do the Surya Dev Aarti
- On Sunday or any day, bathe before sunrise and wear red or clean clothes.
- Fill a copper lota with water and add roli or red sandalwood, red flowers, akshat and a little jaggery.
- Facing the rising sun, say “Om Ghrini Suryaya Namah” and pour the water slowly, viewing the sun through the stream.
- After arghya, circle three times on the spot, then light a ghee lamp and sing the Surya Dev Aarti.
- If keeping the Sunday fast, eat one saltless meal in the day and donate jaggery or wheat.
