Meaning of Hanuman Ji Ki Aarti
The aarti opens with a Sanskrit prayer: “I take refuge in Shri Rama’s messenger — swift as the mind and the wind, master of the senses, foremost among the wise, son of the Wind god and chief of the vanara army.”
Let us perform the aarti of Hanuman, the destroyer of the wicked and the strength of Raghunath (Lord Rama). Mountains tremble at his power, and disease and trouble cannot come near him. The son of Anjani is mighty and always helps the saints.
Sent by Rama, he crossed the ocean around the fortress of Lanka without delay, burnt Lanka, destroyed the demons and brought back news of Sita, completing the work of Sita-Rama. When Lakshmana lay unconscious, he brought the Sanjeevani herb and saved his life. He went down to Patala, broke the hold of Ahiravana and tore off his arm — with his left arm he struck down the demon armies and with his right he protected the saints.
Gods, men and sages perform his aarti and call out “Jai Jai Jai Hanuman”; Mother Anjana herself waves the camphor lamp on a golden plate. Whoever sings this aarti of Hanuman dwells in Vaikuntha and attains the highest state.
When and how to sing it
- Every Tuesday and Saturday, after the Hanuman Chalisa.
- On Hanuman Jayanti and during Ram Navami and Diwali puja.
- Light a lamp of ghee or jasmine oil, offer red flowers, sindoor and boondi or gud-chana, then sing the aarti while waving the plate clockwise.
- Many devotees also recite Bajrang Baan in difficult times.
