Hanuman Ashtak (Sankatmochan Hanumanashtak), composed by Goswami Tulsidas, describes in eight verses eight great crises that Hanuman resolved. Every verse ends with “Ko Nahin Janat Hai Jag Mein Kapi, Sankatmochan Naam Tiharo” — who in the world does not know, O Kapi, that your name is the remover of troubles. It is recited on Tuesdays, Saturdays and in any crisis. Below are the full lyrics in English and Hindi, the meaning of each verse and the method.

Meaning of Hanuman Ashtak — the eight crises
- Swallowing the sun: as a child Hanuman swallowed the sun thinking it a fruit, and the three worlds went dark. At the gods’ plea he released it.
- Sugriva’s fear: Sugriva hid on the mountain in fear of Bali. Hanuman met Shri Ram in the form of a Brahmin and made friends of Ram and Sugriva, ending his sorrow.
- The search for Sita: Sugriva had warned that none would survive returning without news of Sita. When all the monkeys were exhausted at the shore, Hanuman brought her news and saved their lives.
- Ashok Vatika: Sita, tormented by Ravana, wished to give up her life. Hanuman killed the demons and gave her the Lord’s ring, ending her grief.
- Lakshman’s life: struck by Meghnad’s arrow, Lakshman fell unconscious. Hanuman brought the physician Sushen, lifted Mount Drona for the Sanjeevani herb and saved Lakshman.
- The serpent noose: Ravana bound everyone in the Nagpash in battle. Hanuman brought Garuda, who cut the bonds.
- Slaying Ahiravan: Ahiravan carried Ram and Lakshman to the netherworld to sacrifice them. Hanuman went there and killed Ahiravan with his army.
- The devotee’s plea: O great lord, you did great deeds for the gods — what trouble of this poor one cannot be removed by you? Remove it quickly.
Doha: glory to the heroic Kapi, red of body, shining red, with a red tail, body hard as the thunderbolt, destroyer of demons.
