The story of Dhyanu Bhagat and Akbar

According to folk legend, in the Mughal era the devotee Dhyanu was leading a group of pilgrims to Jwala Ji (Himachal). To test his faith, Akbar had his horse beheaded and said that if his goddess was true she would restore it. Dhyanu prayed to the Mother and the horse came back to life. Akbar’s attempts to put out the Mother’s flames also failed. Akbar then came barefoot to the shrine and offered a golden canopy — the event this aarti describes.
