Meaning of Tulsi Aarti

1. Refrain: Glory to you, Mother Tulsi. You give happiness to the whole world and grant boons to all.
2. Protector: you are above all yogas and all diseases; you protect everyone and carry them across the ocean of the world.
3. Vishnupriya: you are Shyama (dark tulsi) and Gramya (the tulsi of the home); O beloved of Vishnu, whoever serves you is saved.
4. On Hari’s head: you rest on Lord Hari’s head and the three worlds bow to you; you are famed as the saviour of the fallen.
5. The divine home: born in the forest, you came to the divine home; the human world gets happiness and wealth from you alone.
6. Prayer: tender, dark-complexioned Mother, you are very dear to Hari — wondrous is his love. Remove our troubles and show us grace.

How to do the evening tulsi puja and aarti

1. After the morning bath, offer water to Tulsi ji (some traditions do not offer water on Sunday and Ekadashi).
2. At sunset, light a ghee lamp near Tulsi ji and offer roli, akshat and flowers.
3. Circle the plant while chanting “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” or “Mahaprasad Janani Sarva Saubhagyavardhini”.
4. Then sing “Jai Jai Tulsi Mata” followed by Om Jai Jagdish Hare.
5. In Kartik month it is customary to light a lamp near tulsi every evening for the whole month.

7 rules of Tulsi Aarti and tulsi puja

• Do not pluck tulsi leaves or touch the plant after sunset.
• Do not pluck leaves on Ekadashi, Sunday and Amavasya.
• Pluck leaves gently with the fingers, not the nails.
• Keep the tulsi plant in the courtyard, balcony or north-east.
• Do not keep a dried plant — respectfully immerse it in a river or soil and plant a new one.
• Tulsi is not offered to Lord Ganesh.
• Keep the area around tulsi clean; do not keep footwear near it.
