Meaning of Ahoi Mata Ki Aarti
- Refrain: Glory to you, Ahoi Mata — Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma meditate on you day and night.
- Mother of the world: you are Brahmani, Rudrani and Kamala (Lakshmi), the mother of the world; the Sun and Moon meditate on you and sage Narad sings your glory.
- Giver of joy: the Mother’s form is pure; you give happiness and wealth, and whoever meditates on you is always blessed.
- Protector: you dwell even in the netherworld and give auspicious fruit; you reveal the fruit of karma and save from the troubles of the world.
- Dwelling in the home: virtues come to the home where you dwell; what no one else can do gets done, and the mind does not fear.
- Joy of children: without you there is no happiness and no child; even the plenty of food and drink does not come without you.
- Fourteen jewels: full of lovely virtues, you rose from the ocean of milk; no one gains the fourteen jewels of the churning without you.

The Ahoi Ashtami story (in brief)
A moneylender’s wife went to the forest before Diwali to dig clay to plaster her home. While digging, her spade unknowingly killed a porcupine (syahu) cub. The porcupine cursed her with the loss of children, and one by one her seven sons died. Grieving, she drew pictures of Ahoi Mata and the syahu on Ahoi Ashtami, kept the fast and asked forgiveness. The Mother was pleased and blessed her children with life. That is why the porcupine and her cubs are drawn along with Ahoi Mata.
How to do the Ahoi Mata Ki Aarti
- In the morning bathe and take the sankalp of a waterless fast for your children’s protection.
- In the evening draw Ahoi Mata, the syahu (porcupine) and her cubs with geru on the wall or on paper; place a kalash of water and a karva in front.
- Offer roli, akshat and flowers; offer eight pue, eight puris or halwa and water chestnuts as bhog; in many homes a silver syahu garland (Ahoi) is worn.
- Listen to the Ahoi Ashtami katha, then light a ghee lamp and sing this aarti.

7 rules of Ahoi Mata Ki Aarti
- Stand and do the aarti with a ghee or camphor lamp, moving it clockwise.
- Wave the lamp 4 times at the feet, 2 at the navel, 1 at the face and 7 times over the whole form.
- Offer bhog first, then do the aarti.
- Blow the conch, ring the bell or clap during the aarti — it keeps the mind focused.
- Do not get up or talk in the middle of the aarti.
- Afterwards take the aarti with both hands and share the prasad.
- Keep pronunciation clear; do not rush — sing with feeling.
