Datta Aarti — “Trigunatmak Traimurti Datta Ha Jana” — is the most famous Marathi aarti of Lord Dattatreya, composed by the 16th-century Saint Eknath — the last line “Eka Janardani” is his signature (Eknath’s guru was Janardan Swami). Dattatreya is regarded as the single form of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh and as the primal guru. The aarti is sung on Thursdays and on Datta Jayanti in Datta temples across Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat. Below are the full lyrics, English transliteration and the meaning of each verse.

Meaning of Datta Aarti
- Verse 1: Know Datta as the trinity of the three gunas (Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh) — the incarnation of the three gunas and king of the three worlds. Even the Vedas stop at “neti neti” (not this, not this); words cannot infer him, and gods, sages and yogis cannot hold him even in samadhi.
- Refrain: Glory to you, Shri Gurudatta — as soon as your aarti is waved, worldly worry vanishes.
- Verse 2: Inside and outside you alone are Datta; how will the unfortunate understand this? Where even “para” speech turns back, what motive can there be — there even birth and death come to an end.
- Verse 3: Datta came and stood before me; with devotion I bowed in full prostration; pleased, he blessed me and freed me from the cycle of birth and death.
- Verse 4: Meditation on “Datta Datta” took hold; the mind dissolved and went beyond the mind; the sense of “I and you” was sent away — Eka, disciple of Janardan, says this is the meditation of Shri Datta.
Who is Lord Dattatreya
Dattatreya is the son of sage Atri and Mother Anasuya. According to legend Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh tested Anasuya’s chastity and, pleased, were born as her son — so Dattatreya is shown with three faces and six arms, with a cow and four dogs (symbols of the four Vedas). He learned from 24 gurus such as earth, water and fire. Shripad Shrivallabh and Narasimha Saraswati are regarded as his incarnations; Ganagapur, Narsobachi Wadi and Girnar are the main Datta kshetras.
