Meaning of Narsingh Bhagwan Ki Aarti
- Refrain: Glory to you, Narsingh Hari — you burst from the pillar and removed your devotee’s suffering.
- Merciful: you are kind to the humble and the well-wisher of devotees; half man and half lion, you took a wondrous form and appeared to remove fear.
- Saving Prahlad: you slew the demon Hiranyakashipu who tormented every heart; you accepted Prahlad as your own servant and showed grace to your devotees.
- Praise of the gods: Brahma performs your aarti and garlands you; Shiva hails you and showers flowers.
The story of Prahlad and Hiranyakashipu
The demon king Hiranyakashipu won a boon from Brahma that he could be killed by neither man nor beast, neither by day nor by night, neither inside nor outside a house, neither on earth nor in the sky, by no weapon at all. His son Prahlad was a devotee of Vishnu. When Hiranyakashipu asked “Where is your Vishnu? Is he in this pillar?” and struck it, Lord Narasimha burst from the pillar — neither man nor beast, at twilight, on the threshold, placing him on his thighs — and slew him with his claws. So the boon held true and the devotee was saved.
