Annapurna Mata Ki Aarti — “Barambar Pranam, Maiya Barambar Pranam” — is the aarti of Maa Annapurna, goddess of food and nourishment. Maa Annapurna is a form of Mother Parvati who dwells in Kashi — it is believed that by her grace no home goes hungry. Annapurna Jayanti is celebrated on Margashirsha Purnima (23 December in 2026), and the aarti is also sung when the kitchen’s grain store is worshipped. Meaning of Annapurna Mata Ki Aarti

1. Refrain: O Mother, I bow to you again and again.
2. Glory of the name: O Ambika, where will one who does not meditate on you find rest? Your name is “Annapurna Devi” — by taking it every task succeeds.
3. Eternal name: through dissolution, the change of ages, births and eras your name remains; you create the gods — even Krishna and Ram stand before your glory.
4. Served by the gods: wise Brahma and lovely Shyam with the discus (Vishnu) kiss your feet; Shiva who wears the moon is your servant and gazes at your beauty.
5. Cry for mercy: O Goddess, we are in a pitiable state and your very name is mercy; save us, O lover of those who take refuge — your abode is our refuge.
6. Seed mantras: Shreem, Hreem, Aim, Kleem — you are faith, learning, Lakshmi and desire; O Mother full of radiance and peace, grant us a selfless boon.

The story of Maa Annapurna of Kashi

According to legend, Lord Shiva once said the world is illusion and food is illusion too. To show the value of food, Mother Parvati made all food vanish from the world. Famine spread and gods and humans were tormented by hunger. Then Mother Parvati appeared in Kashi as Annapurna and opened her kitchen; Shiva himself came with a begging bowl to ask her for alms. Since then Maa Annapurna’s temple stands near Kashi Vishwanath, and at Diwali the golden Annapurna is shown there on Annakut.

How to do the Annapurna Mata Ki Aarti

1. On Annapurna Jayanti or any Friday clean the kitchen and worship the stove and grain store (rice and flour containers).
2. Offer a red chunari, sindoor, flowers and akshat to Maa Annapurna’s picture.
3. Offer rice kheer, halwa or home-cooked sattvic food as bhog.
4. Light a ghee lamp, sing this aarti and finally feed someone in need — that is the essence of Annapurna worship.

7 rules of Annapurna Mata Ki Aarti

• Keep the kitchen clean; do not touch the grain store with unwashed hands.
• Do not disrespect food — do not leave food on the plate.
• Do the aarti standing, with a ghee lamp.
• Offer bhog to the Mother first, then the family.
• On the puja day always feed someone who is hungry.
• Do not get up or talk in the middle of the aarti.
• Afterwards take the aarti with both hands and share the prasad.
